Bethany Mar Thoma Church: A Journey of Faith
Bethany Church traces its origins to a pivotal moment in 1995 when a group of devout individuals from St. James Marthoma Church, Orangeburg, NY, gathered at the home of Mr. Thomas John. United by prayer and a shared vision, they embarked on a journey that would lead to the establishment of a new spiritual community in Rockland County.
Formally inaugurated as a prayer group on November 5, 1995, Bethany Marthoma Church commenced its worship services at Hope Chapel in Thiells, NY, with an initial membership of 35 families. Despite encountering various challenges, the fledgling congregation remained steadfast in their faith and commitment to Jesus Christ. Dr. M.S. Isaac provided invaluable leadership during these formative days, guiding the group through both individual and collective deliberations with the diocesan leadership.
One significant milestone occurred on April 29, 1996, when key members convened at the Diocesan center in Pennsylvania to meet with Rt. Rev. Dr. Zacharias Mar Theophilus and other dignitaries. Following fruitful discussions, the proposal to establish a distinct prayer group within an existing church structure was unanimously endorsed. Subsequently, the community affiliated with St. Peters Marthoma Church, New Jersey, while continuing its worship services at Hope Chapel.
The resolution of administrative matters and the transition towards independent status were facilitated under the leadership of Rev. Philip P. George, who assumed responsibility as the vicar of St. Peters Marthoma Church. Empowered by the support of the Diocesan Bishop and guided by a spirit of cooperation, the congregation navigated through a series of deliberations and decisions.
In the early 2000s, a pivotal moment arrived when the Diocesan Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Zacharias Mar Theophilus, initiated a confidential dialogue with the leadership of Bethany Church. Following a constructive exchange, assurances were given regarding the transformation of the prayer group into a fully-fledged church entity. Subsequent directives were issued to Rev. Philip P. George, and collaborative efforts ensued, culminating in a series of meetings at Sinai Marthoma Center.
Throughout this transformative journey, the dedication of both office bearers and members alike remained unwavering. Through prayer, perseverance, and prudent action, Bethany Church emerged as a beacon of faith and community in the Rockland County area, embodying the enduring spirit of its founders and the enduring grace of God.
With deep gratitude, we reflect on the pivotal contributions of our bishops in realizing the cherished dream of establishing Bethany Church. Late Joseph Marthoma Metropolitan, a pillar of support to the prayer group, exemplified unwavering dedication. Following discussions regarding the needs of the prayer group, Thirumeni pledged assistance in elevating it to church status, contingent upon deliberations at the Synod, facilitated by the Diocesan Bishop. The prayer group experienced transformative changes under his stewardship after he assumed the role of Suffragan Metropolitan. We express profound thanks for Thirumeni's unwavering support and commitment to the prayer group's journey.
Similarly, Late Rt. Rev. Dr. Zacharias Mar Theophilus Suffragan Metropolitan, during our tenure as a prayer group affiliated with St. Peters Marthoma Church, Teaneck, New Jersey, honored his commitment to our church formation. Thirumeni's steadfast efforts, conducted without fanfare, navigated the intricate process leading to the establishment of Bethany Marthoma Church. We extend heartfelt appreciation to all bishops of the Marthoma Church for their exemplary leadership.
The subsequent submission of requested documents in 2000 set the stage for pivotal deliberations at the Episcopal Synod convened in Munnar from February 19-22, 2001. Subsequently, on March 27, 2001, the Diocesan Bishop issued a Kalpana approving the establishment of Bethany Marthoma Church. Commencing services on April 8, 2001, at St. Gregorio’s Mission Center in Suffern, NY, marked a significant milestone for the fledgling congregation.
The inaugural worship service, presided over by Rt. Rev. Dr. Zacharias Mar Theophilus Episcopa on September 23, 2001, was a momentous occasion attended by dignitaries and community representatives. Gratitude is extended to late Rev. Fr. M.K. Thomaskutty of St. Johns Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church for his generous support during this period.
Following relocation to the Rockland Psychiatric Center Protestant church, subsequent developments necessitated finding an alternate place for worship. The acquisition of property at 90-94 Old Orangeburg Rd, Orangeburg, NY, in May 2007, was made possible through the unanimous decision and collective financial contributions of all members.
The renovation and conversion of the acquired building into a place of worship commenced under the leadership of Rev. K. George and a dedicated team of volunteers. Their tireless efforts culminated in the commencement of worship services at the renovated church on February 17, 2008. The formal dedication ceremony, conducted by Diocesan Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Euyakim Mar Koorilos Episcopa, further marked this significant milestone on April 12, 2008.
Over time, as the congregation expanded, the need for a larger church became apparent, leading to the formation of a Building Committee in 2012. Under the stewardship of dedicated members, plans for the construction of a new church materialized, culminating in the laying of the foundation stone on April 21, 2019.
Despite challenges, including the impact of the pandemic, the construction of the new church was successfully completed in 2022, thanks to the generous contributions and sacrifices of members and well-wishers. Gratitude is extended to the leadership team of the building committee for their tireless efforts.
The official inauguration of the church by Diocesan Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Isaac Mar Philoxinos Thirumeni on July 16, 2022, marked a significant milestone in our journey. We acknowledge the grace of God and the collective prayers and support of the community that guided us through this transformative journey, positioning Bethany Marthoma Church as a shining star within the Marthoma community.
In conclusion, the journey of Bethany Marthoma Church, from its humble beginnings as a prayer group to the flourishing congregation it is today, stands as a testament to the grace of God and the unwavering dedication of its members. With the initial membership of 35 families growing to encompass 80 families, the church has thrived through the collective efforts and generosity of its community.
The remarkable achievement of raising nearly 2 million dollars for the construction of the new church building is a testament to the deep commitment and sacrificial giving of the members. Their contributions, both financial and spiritual, have been instrumental in realizing this shared vision. The success of Bethany Church can be attributed to the cohesive unity and familial bond that binds its members together. It is this spirit of collaboration and mutual support that has enabled the church to overcome challenges and achieve milestones along its journey.
